Enduroboxer…

Yes, what about it? The first BMW R80G/S? The airhead that jump-started the career of dualsport motorcycles and dominated the Paris-Dakar Rally? 

Yes, that one, on steroids! Or on a diet..? I’m not sure, let’s get into it! 

Intro

Inspired by German legends Fritz Witzel, Eddi Hau, and Herbert Schek, Manuel had the idea to enter an 800cc airhead into an enduro rally for twins >500cc. Not the obvious choice, since the airheads are neither particularly lightweight nor particularly powerful. Especially the ones that were originally assigned to the German Police Force. So what did Manuel do to this battleship of a bike to allow him to race in the enduro class and even become German national champion in the Interessengemeinschaft Enduro (IGE) class? 

The donor bike

He acquired the former Augsburger bike and reinforced the frame to allow for the abuse he was about to put it through. He designed, cut, and welded reinforcements to the steering head, the top tube, and to the swingarm attachment points. Then, he swapped the original twinshock for a later model paralever. This reduces the reactionary forces of the drive shaft construction and allows for the use of a centrally mounted rear shock. The top of that shock mounts to the main frame, rather than to the rear subframe, which was common standard on the original twinshock airheads. The current subframe Manuel built himself, and hosts the Maico seat and the SR Racing muffler, another weight saver. The elongated design allows for sufficient padding and shifting weight easily in rough terrain. A Preston Petty MX fender prevents the mud from collecting on top of the bike.

The modifications

At the front, all mid-1970’s components have been swapped out for more modern, high-performance parts. A WP AER fork sits in reinforced CNC aluminium triple clamps. These too Manuel designed and produced inhouse. Just behind that sits an aluminium petrol tank, kindly donated by a Husqvarna. The engine sits centrally in the frame and Manuel heavily modified it to suit his needs. Most obvious are the additional oil-cooler, the rerouted exhaust headers, and the hefty bash-plate. Yet something is off when you look at it. If you look closely, you will find that he ground off the top of the engine case, timing cover, and front engine cover to save weight. It currently boosts 880cc and puts out sufficient grunt to get Manuel across the finish line first. It’s not comparable to what a modern 900cc engine would put out in terms of power, but remember that these engines were engineered to be very rideable. They put out an impressive amount of torque across the rev range. And that is saying something! Especially when you consider that Manuel stands over 2 metres tall. Perhaps that’s the secret to his success. He found a niche where he can combine his height, his talent, and his wrenching skills, and compete at the top level. When you see him on his enduroboxer, he whips it around like a dirtbike!

Put to action

What makes the bike so special is that it has been built to ride, and that it is ridden. For many years now it accompanies Manuel at sport events, and they have experienced many highs and lows together (pun intended!). They have ridden the Erzberg Rodeo, Le Tourquet, and the many IGE enduro competitions. And still, it makes him happy to ride! About the bike in his own words [translated from German]: “The motorcycle rides great, it is really fun. One should not forget though, that I built it specifically for myself, and that I massively modified it over the years. A bike so fitting, I would never have been able to buy off the shelf.”

We have become accustomed to the motorcycles that leave the workshop of Unikat. The Warsaw Poland based outfit have their own unique take on a number of different motorcycles. That’s why their motto is: “1-of-1”. As in, there is and will only be 1 model of each of their handcrafted machines. From a business point of view this could be seen as risky. But from an artistic point of view, well, there is no other way.

Luckily for us, the standard is pretty high when it comes to their custom built motorcycles, and the BMW you see here today is no exception. Built on behalf of Bartek Prokopowicz, a Polish movie director and lifelong petrolhead, Grzegorz Korczak decided to do something different this time. What started out as a standard BMW R80 police style motorcycle, has been transformed into a cafe racer styled tracker. What makes this 1978 BMW even more special is the treatment all surface areas were given to get a very distinct look. Take a closer look and you’ll see what we mean. Some parts look a bit rusty, and maybe even a bit rough and dirty. Make no mistake, this was done on purpose, through a series of rigorous processes, to achieve this unique, patina look. As if this BMW was built a long time ago. Very cheeky!

It’s clear that this BMW R80 is meant to look a bit rough and used, but that’s just one part of the story. Underneath the surface, everything was redesigned. Let’s start with the most notable changes, like the rear subframe. Or rather, the lack thereof. We see that on top of the minimalistic subframe a beautifully stitches single seat is resting. It almost looks as if it is floating. Some of the worlds’ smallest LED brake and indicator lights can be found underneath the seat.

To keep a clean look, the battery had to be relocated somewhere less obvious; underneath the bike. A custom battery bracket was fabricated to allow for the relocation. This gives the BMW a clean look. The engine and air intake has been kept stock for a change, and we love that! Everything was done to ensure the 800cc boxer is up to snuff, thanks to a thorough inspection and service. At the front the suspension was upgraded to YSS springs and received a pair of fork gaiters. A set of YSS fully adjustable twin shocks take care of business at the rear.

But there is more! Although the rest of the front looks stock, most isn’t. First there is the Motogadget speedo, that looks a lot smaller than the factory cockpit. A black aluminium handlebar replaced the stock steel unit. The handlebar grips have been wrapped with leather, and at the end of them, a pair of Motogadget bar-end indicators have been mounted. A classic oversize black round headlight adds to the distinguished look. The custom short fenders, the blacked out exhaust headers, and the twin brushed end cans all add to the classiness of this R80. No wonder it took almost a year to complete this project!

In the end, UNIKAT managed to create yet another timeless looking custom motorcycle. It’s hard to imagine that they built another bike simultaneous to this project. And yet, they did just that! Stay tuned for more, here on BikeBrewers.

A Different Kind of Build
The 30-year-old Maarten Bressers has amazed us before with some beautiful custom BMW motorcycles. Although his preference usually went to boxer twins, the man behind Moto Rebuild decided to take a walk on the wild side, and to venture into the world of BMW inline engine motorcycles

Realistically, we have seen countless of gorgeous builds that were based around the R-series Bavarian pride. A K-series BMW however, is something completely different. When you think about it, where the R-series were meant as no-nonsense motorcycles, using the simplest of technologies, the K-series was nothing short of high tech when it first came out. No round, organic shapes on the K-series, but hard straight lines and a boxy design.

Fallen like a Brick
So why a K-series then? Maarten and his father, who is his partner in crime at Moto Rebuild, wanted to do something different this time. Were a boxer engine BMW allows for easy work, the K-series bikes require a lot more thorough thinking. Modifying a K75 or K100 and making it look balanced is not an easy job. But when Maarten saw a modified K100 on Instagram, the seed was planted and he wanted to have a go at one for himself.


Once the craftsman had made up his mind, a BMW K100 from 1987 was quickly sourced. He didn’t know exactly what the end result was going to look like, but he knew that the strength of this particular model lays in its angular design, so a robust front was a must. The biggest challenge was going to be to get the rear subframe to look nice and to allow the lines of the fuel tank to match with his design.

Community United
Maarten made a number of molds to create a custom set of fairings for his K100 project. We know firsthand that he regularly asked his followers on Instagram for their opinion. In a way, this has helped him to shape his project into what it is now. One could argue that this has been a collaboration between Moto Rebuild and his followers, which makes it quite unique!

Premium Parts
At the front we see a custom set of triple clamps, with LSL mirrors and a KOSO speedometer. The wide handlebar is also courtesy of LSL, as are the indicators and rear taillight. The side panels of the fuel tank are custom made by Maarten himself. The same goes for the custom subframe that now has a seat-pan from Cafe4Racer and a custom-made seat from Miller Kustom Upholstery. The LED headlight and handlebar grips are from the catalogue of Max Inc. A unique mounting system is used at the rear, which allows the shock absorber to sit almost horizontal, clearing the view to that beautiful rear wheel. The rear shock is from YSS, and ensures proper traction, as do the Michelin Anakee dual-sport tires.

When you look closely, you will see that this BMW has a ton of small details, like the 3D printed injection cover, ignition cover, and even rear wheel hub, courtesy of Motoism Custom and Raw Metal Racers. If you look closely you will spot built-in indicators on the front fork cover, built to spec by Motoism. All of this combined with the matt red/orange color, we think this is one of the best looking custom K100 we have seen passing the revue here on BikeBrewers. What sets this build apart from all other K100’s is that this scrambler looks very sporty, almost aggressive. Although a boxer twin has more “character” to its rumble, the K100 shines in smoothness.

Humble beginnings
There are BMW boxers, and then there are BMW boxers. The difference? Well, here goes. Ever since BMW introduced their famous boxer twin configuration back in the 1920’s, they kind of had a reputation of being a bit…dull. That was until they started kicking the competition’s butts in the 1981 Paris-Dakar Rally. And just like that, boys and girls, the BMW boxer became a legend. That doesn’t mean that all of their BMW’s motorcycles were “cool”. BMW built their motorcycles really well. They were considered to be the ONLY European motorcycle manufacturer that built genuinely reliable motorcycles in the 20th century. And their bikes handled pretty decently. As a matter of fact, with the exception of the GS models, BMWs were considered to be mostly…ehhh…boring.

High in demand
All of this meant 2 things really: 1. There are a ton of old BMWs still riding around, since they were built to last. 2. Owning a second-hand BMW was something of an acquired taste for most people, well, mostly young people. This lack of desirability made them cheap to buy as a pre-owned vehicle. Enter the mystical realm of cafe racer building. With a doubt, one of the most popular base motorcycles to build a custom machine out of are, hands down, BMW motorcycles. Because of their popularity with builders, the old boxer has become one of the hottest bikes in the scene. Don’t just take our word for it, just make sure to check out all the other BMW bikes we have covered in the past, oh I don’t know, year or so.

The Builder from Dussen
Which brings us to the subject of the matter. The BMW we see in front of us today is the prized possession of Ferry Westerlaken. The 45 year old Dutchman who, until recently, owned Ace-Cafe Racers Parts, and founder/owner of Beemer Boys, which is a private label he created for custom BMW parts, built this BMW from the ground up. Did we forget to mention that he also runs a company that trades classic motorcycles? It’s called Altena Classics, make sure to go check it out. He also has a family with three daughters. We find it incredibly difficult to imagine how and where he finds the time to juggle all of this, truly impressive. It isn’t the first time we covered a bike that was built by Ferry. Who remember this Moto Guzzi?

Barn-find!
It all started with a 1985 BMW R80, which was found in a shed only a couple of hours away from where Ferry lives, covered in a thick layer of dust. It was clear that doing a standard cafe-racer job wouldn’t suffice; Ferry wanted to take things to the next level. Not just because he likes to keep his standards high, but also because the bike needed to showcase all the cool new parts he offers through his private label Beemer Boys. The list of mods is very long, however, the most notable piece of work on this R80 has to be the custom exhaust system. It definitely looks unique, almost menacing.

Where there’s a will…
We asked Ferry what he found most challenging about this build: “There were quite a few challenges. The greatest challenge was finding the time to do things. I have a full time job, two webshops, a motorcycle shop, and a family with 3 awesome daughters. So quite a busy life. In addition, the exhaust system was a thing. I didn’t want something standard, but a system made of segments that would run along the top instead of the bottom. Some of the problems to deal with the exhaust is the heat emission along carburetors, tank, fuel hose from the fuel taps. Oil level checks also had to remain possible, and the exhaust had to follow the lines of the motorcycle. The motorcycle had to be built in a minimalistic way with as little fuss as possible around the clip-ons. The BMW is a widely used motorcycle to build a cafe racer or bobber. Despite the differences, they often look like each other. I like the exhaust the most. The lines are good, the looks of the tubes are great, the segments are mint, and the sound is fantastic. I must admit that it rides better than stock. When the motorcycle was ready, she went on the dyno for optimal tuning. This gave the R80 a little bit more horsepower. The handling has also improved with the right adjustment of the suspension. I wanted something different, and I’m very happy with the result!”

Despite the fact that Ferry is very capable, he couldn’t have done this without the help of Ace13 and Hakky Motorsport.

BMW R18 – 1800cc cruiser
There are moments where you see a picture of a motorcycle, and it doesn’t make you blink or think twice. Something like that happened when we saw the first pictures of the BMW R18 circulating the web; we weren’t too impressed. Another manufacturer that tips its toes in the cruiser segment, we thought. Why would BMW, who is the industry leader when it comes to big adventure bikes, venture into the realm of cruisers? As it turns out, the R18 harkens back to BMW’s heritage dating back to one of the first BMW boxer models; the R5 from 1936/1937. Much of the inspiration for the modern R18 comes from this particular motorcycle. Moreover, the R18 is not BMW’s first attempt to enter the heavy cruiser market in recent history. Who remembers the R1200C? That hardly brought BMW the success they had hoped for, even James Bond couldn’t change that. Despite this, I was not immediately impressed by the R18. It looks nice and the chrome is shiny, that’s about it.

Until you start reading the spec sheet, and realize that there is something quite provocative about the R18. To begin with, there’s that massive engine. 1800cc boxer twin engine to be precise, still air-cooled, but with a little bit of help from an external oil-cooler. The 90hp of peak power at a lowish 4750 rpm isn’t too bad considering the displacement, but the 158Nm of torque at a ridiculous 3000 rpm is what gets our hearts pump faster; this we gotta try!

And try we did. BMW Motorrad in the Netherlands invited us to try out their new, dressed-down version of the R18, called ‘First Edition’, and the full-fat version of the R18 known as the ‘Trans Continental’. This review is about the R18 ‘First Edition’. The review on the R18 ‘Trans Continental’ will follow next.

First impression of the R18 ‘First Edition’
Wow, this thing is massive! That was the first thing that came to mind when I saw R18. It’s that engine that blows your mind. 900cc on each side, the barrels are huge compared to what we’re used to. The black color with white pinstriping is simple and elegant at the same time. It looks timeless on the R18. Then there are the beautiful chrome polished fishtail exhaust pipes; they look incredibly beautiful; we wish more manufacturers would put them on cruiser! What BMW did really well with the R18, is hide the ugly catalytic converters underneath the engine, between the exhaust headers, out of eye-sight. Wire-spoked wheel, with stainless steel spokes and black rims add to that distinguished look and feel. But the ‘piece-de-resistance’ has to be that exposed shaft drive. It’s so incredibly old-school, we fell head over heels for it. That’s how you build a retro bike!

Second impression
When you swing your leg over the seat, you feel you are seated on something special. There is one minimalistic speedo, but make no mistake, it has an LCD display that allows you to access information most companies would be jealous of! The R18 is brought to life in a similar way like most modern cars and motorcycles. You keep the key in your pocket, and simply press the power button on the right controls. There are 3 ride modes from which you can choose: Rock, Roll, and Rain. We had to guess and search up what Rock and Roll did, but there was very little doubt about the Rain-mode. This impacts the throttle response and traction control in a pleasant and non-intrusive matter. Rock would be similar to ‘Sport’ mode on most bike, and Roll is the equivalent to ‘Normal’ or ‘Touring’. We kept the R18 on Rock, because it allowed for a very useable throttle response.

Third impression
Picking the bike from it’s side stand immediately gives away the elephant on the room; 345 kilograms of wet weight. Maneuvering the R18 at stand still is difficult to say the least. Getting the bike rolling will help, so you hit the start button. First thought: This bike rocks! Quite literally! The slightest opening of the throttle results in a massive swing to the right, caused by the inertia exerted by the flywheel, which must be huge. That’s also when the first lesson was learned: you keep both feet firmly on the ground when you pull up in first gear. If you forget that, you risk tipping the bike over to the left by the sheer force of the flywheels’ movement. But, as predicted, once the mass is in motion, the R18 hides its weight pretty well. A neat feature the R18 has was the ‘reverse’ gear, which needs to be operated manually. This helps with moving the bike backwards without looking like you’re hitting the gym, if needed.

King of the road
The sound the exhaust produces when you open up the throttle is magnificent. It reminds me of the sound a turbo-charged V8 diesel engine makes; deep, short, throaty. With a similar powerband too! A small twist of the right wrist results in incredible acceleration. It feels as if the road is moving underneath your tires, and not the other way around! The R18 invites for some serious mile-munching. The handlebars aren’t too far of a reach, the seat is very comfortable, but the seating position leaves much to desire. If you have a larger shoe size than 43 (Size 10), you’ll struggle with keeping your feet from hitting the cylinders and air-intake. You want to sit with your feet a bit further to the front, but you can’t. Instead, it looks like you’re sitting a on a small camping chair. Too bad, because it could have made a massive improvement on the ride quality. The same goes for the suspension. The front Showa fork works well under most circumstances, but the rear ZF shock with its limited travel of 90mm only (!) can be a bit too harsh on anything that isn’t silky smooth tarmac. The brakes are good for such a massive bike, but they’re not nearly as good as the radial Brembo brakes that can be found on Moto Guzzi’s 1400 California. The 16-liter fuel tank provided a sufficient range for comfortable riding without getting range anxiety, we averages around 16 km/l or 38 US MPG under mixed riding conditions. Rides of up to 2 hours or done effortlessly, especially with nice comforts like cruise-control and heated grips, which worked flawlessly.

Verdict
Overall, the BMW R18 ‘First Edition’ was a very pleasant surprise, to the point where we are foreseeing a renaissance of the custom cruisers. We’ve seen revivals of retro style motorcycle before, such as café racers and scramblers. Could the cruiser be the next big thing? If so, then BMW has set the standard pretty high as far as we’re concerned. Just like with any other new BMW, there is an accessories catalogue that seems to be endless with exclusive and high-quality special equipment, were a potential buyer can opt for features such as cruise control, special paint, special wheels, heated comfort seat and so on. With a starting price of just below 28,000 Euro in the Netherlands, prices can go up to nearly 40,000 euro. That’s a lot of money, question is if the R18 is worth it. We’ll let the market decide, but we sure would love to see these beasts more often on the road.

Moto Adonis
This is a story about a motorcycle we saw some time ago when we last visited the workshop of Moto Adonis in the Netherlands. Back then we were covering their immaculate Harley-Davidson LiveWire project. What Arthur Renkema (owner) told us back then, was that the same customer who had commissioned the HD LiveWire build, also ordered the build of a unique BMW R NineT. We feel that the R NineT needs no further introduction. The men of Moto Adonis, which also includes Job Leussink and Daan Borsje, were given a “carte blanche” to build something after their imagination. And oh boy did they deliver! We weren’t allowed to film or take photographs of the bike back then, however, we are proud to share this build with you now that it has been received by its owner. Artistic freedom
The wildest thing you can do to a custom bike builder is to do what they want. For the bike builder it can be great having all the artistic freedom in the world. At the same time, it could be that the results might be different than what the customer was expecting. Like a knife that cuts on both ends. Tricky, but not impossible. The only real wish from the owner was that it needed to be capable of being ridden hard. That’s it. Lean and mean
The idea to build something that looked mean and futuristic came to mind, kind of like with the HD LiveWire they built for the same customer. So, the team designed a custom girder fork, in-house. With some help from fellow builders and friends at Wimoto, the geometry got sorted. The fork got a Wilbers treatment, as did the rear shock, to make the R NineT handle like a dream. An interesting fact is that the new girder fork weighs a whopping 10 kilograms less than the stock forks! Not only that, there’s also the added bonus of seeing the insane set-up “work” while riding, very satisfying indeed. Cardboard and tape
The fuel tank and body panels are all handmade from aluminium. But before that was made, a lot of cardboard, tape, and buckets full of coffee were consumed before the final design was made. A neat and not so uncommon method to model parts before the bending of metal takes place. As a matter of fact, a number of tank designs were made before a permanent decision was made. This ties into the company’s motto: If it could be better, you should make it better! Head to tail
Once the overall lines were set, the next step was taken, which involved a lot of metal working: bending, welding, and grinding. A Motogadget speedo take residence in the fuel tank, to keep the triple clamp clean and free of distractions. Another neat feature that immediately caught our eyes is that beautifully sculpted tail section. Completely handmade, obviously, but when you look closer, the details are actually quite impressive. From the custom leather seat, made by Miller Kustom Upholstery, to the one-off, clear LED tail lights. This would be the right time to mention that ‘The Girder’ as the bike is called, had LED lights all around. Box exhaust for the boxer
Right underneath the modified subframe, a custom, stainless steel exhaust system is neatly seated, with a pair of very rectangular mufflers, curtesy of MAD exhausts. We’re heard this BMW run in real-life and were surprised the learn that the R NineT actually sounds really modest. The exhaust was made with ride-ability in mind, which explains the docile sound. You don’t want the ‘popo’ stopping you every minute. However, exhaust does come with a pair of removable db-killers, for when you really want a big smile on your face. Any color, as long as it is black!
Henry Ford, the founder of Ford automobiles once said that you could buy a Ford in any colour, as long as it was black. There’s a reason for that, one of them was that it makes anything look impressive. What Henry probably didn’t think of, was how challenging it is to pick the right kind of black! Gloss, semi-gloss, matt, metallic; the choices are overwhelming sometimes. It doesn’t help that the body has some very sharp edges. We think they chose the perfect color for this mean looking bike. The results of this project speak for themselves: this is one futuristic looking scrambler, unlike anything we have ever seen before, and that says a lot! Moto Adonis are really proud of how this BMW R NineT turned out, and rightfully so. They have been building custom motorcycles since 2012, but with this one, they just upped their game.

No introduction needed. It is time again for a Top 10 list, and this time we’ve decided to split it up into 2 instalments. Ladies and gentlemen, we would like to present to you, the totally arbitrary, BikeBrewers Top 10 Cafe Racers Hall of Fame: Part 1!

1. BMW R nineT Café Racer by K-Speed
In 2018 K-Speed broke the internet with their incredibly elegant yet mean looking BMW R nineT Café Racer. It is safe to say that since then the Thailand based outfit K-Speed has grown out to be one of the industry top-tier bike builders.

The BMW R nineT is one of those machines that can be put under the famous words “Veni, Vidi, Vici”. Right from the introduction back in 2014, it was clear that BMW aimed at a big piece of the retro bike scene as we know it today. Next to an impressive catalog of custom parts, big brands started created complete lines of parts, especially for the R nineT. And BMW bootstrapped different editions of the Beemer, like the Racer and Scrambler. Nevertheless, I think we’ll be stuck to this popular boxer the next couple of years (probably decades). But is that a problem? Of course not! It’s a very good bike and I love to see them getting customized.

2. BMW K100 Cafe Racer by Retrorides
Another oldie but goldie: a BMW K100 Café Racer by Retrorides. With this bike, the Brazilian brothers Gustavo and Rodrigo Lourenço showed what they are capable of and that they were able to redefine the standards for building cafe racer, still the #1 bike for cafe racer projects. With so many unique creations it’s hard to stand out, but the K100 simply hit a sweet spot. While Gustavo and Rodrigo have a long-time history in building hot rods, they sure know how to make something special out of a two-wheeled machine.

3. YAMAHA TRX850 Café Racer by Seb Hipperson
It was no secret that the Yamaha TRX850 was meant as a direct competitor of the Ducati 900SS. Just like the Duc, the TRX850 had a 2 cylinder engine in a tube frame, a sporty riding position and a bikini fairing. The most exciting about the TRX was its engine. It was based on the Yamaha TDM850 and had 5 valves per cylinder (3 in and 2 out) but the TRX was the first production motorcycle with a 270°  crank (or 90° if you prefer) with the so called “crossplane” technology. With this the parallel twin produced sound and feeling of a V-twin. A technology Yamaha also used for the Yamaha XSR700 which results in a great power band. The 80hp and 85Nm are available at very low RPM’s.

Unlike the 900SS, the TRX was not a big sales hit, but amongst motorcycle lovers the bike is called one of the “best kept secrets” and a “forgotten gem”. Bespoke furniture maker Seb Hipperson from Londen had that same love for the TRX and decided to build his own TRX850 Cafe Racer. Watch and enjoy! The bike was showed to the public at the Bike Shed London back in 2015.

4. Honda CB250 Café Racer by Black Bean Motorcycles
The Honda CB is and always will be a great base bike for a café racer. Especially the 4 cylinder bikes with the CB750 and CB550 being dominant. Pretty obvious, since these were real sales canons in the 70s, 80s and even 90s. But Honda also produced CB’s with a parallel twin cylinder like the CB500(t), CB400 and CB360. The small Honda CB250G, which you see below, was mainly produced for the European market and is only produced between 1974 and 1976. This little machine puts out 30hp and had a six-speed gearbox, which was pretty odd those days. Honda claimed it to be “one of the finest sport-touring motorcycles available”. 

The Honda CB250 Cafe Racer you see here is built by Blackbean Motorcycles, a German workshop in the heart of Munich.

5. Moto Guzzi California Café Racer by Radical Guzzi
Born on the drawing table of Sylvain Berneron, better known as the Holographic Hammer and executed by Radical Guzzi from Germany: a real muscle bike café racer based on the extremely bulky Moto Guzzi California 1400 8v.The plan was to create a high torque café racer, so the idea was to use the massive 1400cc engine of the California. But to lose the bulky character, they had to strip down the weight of this machine, which originally is 322kg (dry). They’ve managed to reduce that fat to 195kg! A lot of high end parts and custom parts where uses like: seat and frame, wheel hubs, triple clamps for the 58mm Marzocchi front suspension, Brembo brakes, Öhlins rear shocks, custom exhaust etc. The standard power outpot and torque of 96hp and 120Nm were tuned to 105hp and 138Nm, thanks to Keihin FCR 41 carbs and custom exhaust system.

Dominant Boxer
When BMW first launched their R nineT back in 2014, we knew that it would become an instant hit. The air-cooled boxer is gaining incredible momentum with bikers around the world. The awkwardness of the flat-twin has become the epitome of cool, and it isn’t hard to see why. We would go as far as saying that ditching the renowned tele-lever front suspension for a pair of USD/conventional forks is probably the best thing BMW could have done to their R-series motorcycles. We have ridden one of BMW’s latest R nineT models; a full review will follow soon on BikeBrewers, so stay tuned for that.

German Built German Bike
Classic-Bike Raisch decided to try some of their magic on the venerable R nineT. This Germany-based outfit has been making moves in the motorcycle custom scene for some time now. Almost all of their builds are based around Triumph modern-classics such as the Bonneville and Thruxton. They’ve been testing the waters with their Bavarian brothers, and it looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Old School Cool
The R nineT has got to be one of the most desirable modern-classics on the market today. With the cylinder-heads poking out on each side of the motorcycle, the rumble of the 360-degree firing order, and the rocking motion when you blip the throttle; we too have developed a weak spot for the boxer engine BMW’s. The R nineT may have an air-cooled engine that has been around for some time, it still puts out a very healthy 110 hp and 119 Nm of torque. Nothing groundbreaking by modern standards, but the way the engine delivers this power is like riding a slingshot. Plenty of torque available from the get-go, and no matter what gear you are in, just point where you want to go and shoot.

Blank Canvas
The BMW isn’t your basic bike. As a matter of fact, considering the price point BMW is placing R nineT, you can expect a premium motorcycle. Which it is. Every bit and piece on the bike looks like it is made by hand, and the fit and finish has got to be some of the best we have seen on a factory machine. Still, there is some room for improvement, and the folks at Classic-Bike Raisch think so too. As a matter of fact, when the roadster was first release it was marketed as a motorcycle for the customizer. Lo and behold, that’s just what happened to the fine sample we have here today.

Fancy Jewellery
Raisch went full throttle on this build, aiming to build an elegant and noble looking café racer. At the front, a set of fully adjustable Öhlins fork have taken over the stock 46mm upside-down suspension. A set of wave brake discs ensure sufficient stopping power when the Brembo M32 radial calipers. At the rear we see a suspension upgrade as well. A custom made Bilstein shock evens out any bumps using the BMW paralever system. Talking about the rear section, this R nineT has received a rear subframe conversion by KRT Framework. It is hard to ignore the beautiful AC Schnitzer PVM wheels. Not only to they look great, but they also reduce the unsprung rotating mass, which improves handling. Combined with the Remus full exhaust system, this boxer looks like it is ready to fight.

Build your own!
The fit and finish of this Raisch built Café Racer seems endless. Small details such as the Monza fuel filler cap, LSL footrests, the LED bates-style round headlight. The familiar Motogadget Speedo shows all the essential information. The air-box covers are a Classic-Bike Raisch own; very classy. Now, it can be that you are now interested in building your own café racer in the same style as this R nineT. Classic-Bike Raisch offers all the used parts on this build, in their web shop.

We are starting a new item here at BikeBrewers, where we take a closer look at the people that build the motorcycles instead of focusing on 1 specific bike, we call it: Bike Builder Profile. And for the very first edition of Bike Builder Profile, we have a very special candidate from the Netherlands: Moto Rebuild

You may have come across some very good-looking BMW R-series custom motorcycles on the internet or Instagram. The dynamic father-and-son duo, Mari and Maarten Bressers are at the heart of the Netherlands based Moto Rebuild. We’ve asked Maarten a few questions about their business, here’s what he had to say.

BB: How and/or why did you get into motorcycles?
MR: My dad made me addicted, he has been riding motorcycles for 40+ years and has often told me stories about his adventures when he took a road trip. Until one day I wanted to get my driver’s license myself and I always dreamed of building a BMW scrambler. New ones are too expensive, so what do you do when there is an expensive price tag? Build it yourself!

BB: When did you start riding (illegally or legally)?
MR: In 2014 after getting my driver’s license, before that I already owned my first bike, a BMW R1100GS so I couldn’t resist taking it for a spin from time to time… As a matter of fact, my father and I (Maarten) started converting the BMW before I even had my license!

BB: Since the R1100GS, what other motorcycles have you had?
MR: I’ve owned and modified a number of bikes, but mostly Honda’s and BMW boxers:
1981 Honda CB400N, 1980 Honda CX500, 1981 BMW R80RT, 1979 BMW R100RS, 1993 BMW R80R, and 1985 BMW R80RT

BB: Which of those bikes brings back the fondest memories?
MR: I think one of the last 2 motorcycles I’ve owned, both BMW R80’s. That’s because I’ve owned these longer and have ridden them more that any of the other bikes I’ve had. Now that we also ride more often and the summer is approaching, we get to meet more people. The bikes are always an interesting point of discussion with fellow bikers, but it always gives a great sense of satisfaction.

BB: Would you say that you have a brand preference? And why?
MR: Absolutely, BMW Boxers. The reason for that is the way the bike vibrates and shakes when it’s idling. It has a real nice character, very old school.

BB: Do you prefer riding or wrenching?
MR: Both! Our goal has always been to convert motorcycles for ourselves and that we can enjoy them ourselves. If we start feeling that itch to build again, we sell the bike we have, and buy another one to modify. This is the main difference between us and most other custom builders.

BB: What would you like to accomplish as a builder?
MR: I want us to be an inspiration for others, riders, builders and non-bikers. That is why we work on establishing our Instagram presence at the moment. But definitely being an inspiration to others who dream of building their own motorcycle.

BB: With an unlimited budget, what kind of motorcycle would you build?
MR: I think I would continue doing what we are already doing. It’s not about how much money you put into it, it’s about the vision and the number of hours of labor and love you put into it. The aim should always be to showcase the original characteristics of the bike.

BB: One of your latest bike builds is the BMW R80R. Could you tell us a bit more about this bike?
MR: I’ve had the R80R for some time and decided it was ready for a make-over again. I’d lke to think that this model has all the ingredients to create a fantastic custom motorcycle. I had a clear idea of how I wanted the bike to look. Furthermore, it already had wire-spoked wheels, which I absolutely love. It has a mono shock at the rear where we could weld a floating saddle, to give a bit more of a futuristic feel. My inspiration came from the fact that I didn’t wanted an old motorcycle to look and feel old.

BB: Did you face any challenges during the build?
MR: There were a few minor challenges. Coating the wheels took me the most time. I work together with my father on the bikes, we do most of the work together. Besides the electrical work, we do most of the stuff ourself. Some of the notable changes we’ve made are the tank swap, and the front fender. They really finish the bike off.

BB: So, now for the most important question of them all: how does it ride?
MR: It rides like a typical BMW: proper. It handles well, the power delivery and torque are smooth, and it sounds phenomenal.

A Photographers Eye
Usually, photographers are people who manage to capture images in ways many of us can’t. At BikeBrewers we have many photographer friends, and it is safe to say that the majority of them are true artists. It never did come to our minds that photographers could have other specialties. This is definitely the case with Gregor Halenda. The Portland, Oregon (USA) based photographer is also a photojournalist and a machinist. On top of that, we would consider him a master bike builder as well.

Boxer history
Gregor loves BMW boxers, especially the GS models, and to be honest, so de we. We suspect that it is most likely fuelled by his childhood, since his late father used to own a 1992 BMW R100GS Paris-Dakar edition. Gregor bought a similar BMW to his dad’s, as a project bike. It that had some interesting work done on it. He decided that the poorly built BMW would be the ideal candidate for a project he has been long dreaming of: building the ultimate GS. Unsure about his own fabricating skills, he thought that this bike would be the ultimate litmus test to find out if he has got what it takes.

Rebuild
The idea was simple: strip down the modified BMW to its bare bones, get rid of all the dodgy electrics and parts that didn’t work, make it as reliable as possible, and add a ton of off-road ability. Making the GS light and nimble, with proper suspension may sound like an easy job, but it often isn’t. The only part that remained on the GS was the fuel tank; everything else got binned.

Beefier rear section
Handling a grinder as one of the first steps of a project can be a daunting perspective, but Gregor pushed through and cut the GS’s original swing arm, only to slot in a swing arm of a R1100GS. This allowed for a wider section rear wheel that allowed for true off -road tire choices. This was a long project in the sense that the first time around the rear swing arm broke on a jump. Not allowing this set back to defeat him, Gregor redid the work and made the swing arm much stronger than before.

Heavy mods
Now that the rear was sorted out, the front needed to be taken care of as well. First up, WP suspension of a KTM 690 Enduro were adopted. The wheels came of the shop of Woody’s Wheel Works. For those of you that have never heard of Woody’s, he is the go-to guy for proper wheel set-up. Next up, the engine. An R100RS engine was used with Lectron 41mm flat slide racing carbs. A special rear subframe fuel-tank was made to accommodate for more fuel, just a like any Dakar machine. The home-made rally fairing is a real nice touch to authentic Dakar racing motorcycles.

Team work makes the dream work!
Gregor couldn’t have done this build without some help from his friends at Baisley High Performance in Portland, how did the engine work by porting the R100RS heads. His pal Heath Knapp did the welding on the rear swing arm while Gregor is still perfecting his aluminium welding skills. There wasn’t a real budget made when he started with this projected, however, Gregor thinks that everything considered, a little over 20.000 USD has been spent on this BMW.

Faster than your KTM!
An added benefit of all the upgrades and part-swaps is that the GS lost some serious weight: over 60lbs (+27kg). Gregor got the GS to weigh in at a 400lbs dry (excluding fluids), which is not bad at all! All the work that was done made the now new GS feel more like a modern dirt bike than anything, much better in every way than the old GS from the 80’s. It feels lighter and nimbler than Gregor’s KTM 950. It has changed dramatically from what it used to be, with the sharper handling and power boost. In the end, the result really do speak for themselves. This project has been a journey for Gregor. Not only did he build the ultimate machine that reminded him of his father’s BMW, but it has also sparked a new passion for him: building motorcycles. Gregor already knows what he wants to build next. We can’t wait to see what he has in store for us.
