Buell is a true outlaw in the motorcycle world. In fact, a Buell is a custom bike from its own. As a former Harley-Davidson employee, Erik Buell decided to start his own motorcycle brand back in 1983, based on H-D engines, but with a more sporty twist. Over the years, Buell developed a small range of production motorcycles, but in 2009 Erik pulled the plug and stopped producing motorcycles. So the Buell is pretty rare, let alone as a base bike for custom projects. Still, I’ve featured some cool Buell’s already. Remember the aggressive XB12 SCM R? And this awesome XB9 Cafe Racer? Or the XB12R Café Racer? The bike right here is from the rockstar builders at K-Speed from Thailand. Owner Eak is known for his keen eye on design and delivered some real high-end builds the past couple of years. His latest creation is called “Road Lightning” and is based on a Buell X1 Lightning.

Buell XB Cafe Racer

Amazing creation by Ask Motorcycles from Japan based on a Buell XB. A mixture of a classic cafe racer and a modern supersport. Owner/builder Rad Yamamoto really pushed his skills in metal fabrication with the alloy body. He tried to create both “slick” and “organic” lines. A design that worked out well on the machine. The machine is named “Kanna”, which means “No God” in Japanese. On the annual Hot Rod & Custom Show in Yokohama, the bike even was the reason to create a new category in the awards section. Honda CG125 Cafe Racer

We all know the usual suspects for building a cafe racer, with the Honda CB-series and BMW R-series as the most popular platforms. Small displacement bikes are usually skipped, but in my opinion, a small bike can also be a great base for building a custom motorcycle. And if we’re talking about small displacement motorcycles, you roughly have two places on the world that pop-up: Asia or Brasil. On these places small bikes are a common way of cheap transportation. Luckily there are some people out there who are not afraid to turn these practical (and rather ugly) machines into something special, just like Fernando Casado, a product design student from Brasil. “Fusqvarna”

This may look like a strange name for a bike that’s actually a Honda FX650. But it’s not the frame or the engine that’s in the center of this build, it’s the mythical gas tank of the Husqvarna back in the 70s and 80s. Since that’s the only Husqvarna part of this machine. The builder, Le Garage Félix (which you may know from this KLR650 Scrambler) made their own version of the Husky; Fusqvarna (with the F from Felix). Honda NTV650 Cafe Racer

Another cool machine built by our Dutch friend Wido Veldkamp, owner of Wimoto. The project was born to surprise his wife for her birthday and the donor is pretty unusual: a Honda NTV650. “An ugly bike with no potential. At least, that’s wat most people think” says Wido. First he wanted to build a scrambler of it, but after fitting some new parts, he changed his plans and mounted a beautiful half fairing which soon changed the aesthetics of the bike making it more looking like a cafe racer. “The Green Goblin” was starting to take shape… [read more]

A Buell is something special from it’s own and we don’t see them too often in the custom scene, but still; I’ve featured some cool Buell’s already. Remember the aggressive XB12 SCM R? Or the XB12R Café Racer?

This Buell XB9 Café Racer I found on Facebook and is built by IRON Pirate Garage from Italy. The XB9 Lightning is a powerful bike with a 984cc V-twin that puts out 92HP and 95Nm to move a wet weight of under 190kg. IRON Pirate stripped down this to cut off even more weight.

I don’t have a list of specs or story of the bike yet, so just enjoy the pictures:

In today’s custom motorcycle scene we see a lot of builds based on Honda’s, BMW’s & Triumph’s. No problem at all, but if someone is walking a different road by selecting a more odd base bike, it gets my instant attention. The last time I’ve featured a custom motorcycle based on a Buell was in October 2015: this awesome XB12 SCM R. But today this cool bike popped up: a café racer based on the Buell XB12R Firebolt.

The creator of this Buell XB12R Café Racer is Miguel Padilla, a motorcycle enthusiast that got injured during a motorcycle accident. Because of his injuries, he could ride for a long time so he decided to build a bike instead of riding it. He picked up a wrecked XB12R Firebolt and started working on it to get it back on the road, with a complete own design twist.

Miguel wanted to keep it simple and let the geometry of the bike in tact. Most modifications are optical like a custom subframe and seat. Fiberglas gas tank and seat cowl. Relocation of some electrical parts, open filters, Graves Motorsport exhaust, Vetter LED headlight, custom rearsets and clip ons etc.

I think the result is worth the share! And a great job for a guy who had several broken ribs during the build…!

A random bike we found on Facebook by Italian brewers Simone Conti Motorcycles (SCM). They customized a Buell XB12 into this awesome ride. Too bad we couldn’t find any specs or list of mods, but we can see that they’ve put a lot of effort in this bike.

Like the design but no love for Buell? Maybe this bolt on streetfighter kit for your Honda CB1000RR is a great option!
