“You dream it, we build it!” a strong slogan from Assen Zahariev’s garage in Sofia, Bulgaria. However, a bike this stunning out of a stock 80° longitudinal V-Twin we could not have dreamt up ourselves. Assen saw a golden opportunity in this rare motorcycle and let his inspiration flow freely.

We have previously featured many CX500 builds, but this is our first CX650 and we are rather excited to tell you all about it! The Honda CX650 with its 673cc is the big brother of the common CX500 models. Whereas the production numbers of the latter easily exceed 180,000, the CX650 in all its versions was limited to roughly 15,000 in total, worldwide. The CX models were loaded with innovative features. Electric-only starting, low-maintenance shaft drives were found on the occasional BMW motorcycle, as were the constant vacuum carburettors, but the liquid cooling and separated ignition system were rather unique. Even though the CX650 and the CX650E looked rather similar, this one looks nothing like it did when it rolled off the production line.

Specialising in BMW motorcycles, the Honda was a bit of a side step for Tossa R. When starting a new project, especially with a bike that is novel to us, most of us start with browsing the interweb and social media, scrolling through dozens of images of custom interpretations of a particular model for ideas and inspiration. Assen went the complete opposite direction and carefully steered clear of other people’s ideas influencing his build. He turned toward the bike and toward himself, and five months later, the result is an elegant yet sporty, urban cafe racer.

With the exception of the seat by Oldman Leathers and the paint by Picasso Motor, all the work was done in-house. Yamaha R6 triple clamps and forks were swapped in to improve the suspension and handling, as well as the stopping power provided by dual floating discs with radially mounted calipers. Combined with the centrally mounted rear shock with external reservoir the suspension is fully adjustable to the rider’s needs. Above the rear shock, tucked in neatly between the downtubes of the frame, are two high flow air filters, allowing the bike to breathe more freely, and together with the custom stainless steel exhaust they bring at least 65 horses out of the stable.

Shortening the exhaust and running it underneath the engine frees up the rear wheel, but removing the side covers and shortening the tail really shifts the visual weight forwards, giving it its sporty appearance. The moon discs in the rear wheel were added to keep the bike visually grounded and balanced. A newly fabricated bracket supports the seat and the custom tail and ensures a perfect optical line from the tail through the carburetors, cylinder heads, and exhaust headers to end in the front axle, emphasising that this bike is built to ride!

The lines of the bike are further accentuated by small bar-end mirrors, a low-profile gage, and clip-ons, streamlining its profile. Electronically, the bike is decked out with high end gauges and bar-end indicators by MotoGadget, and also the head and taillight have been replaced with LEDs to bring it into the 21st century and ensure visibility. This motorcycle does not need its lights to attract attention, though. We reckon parking it at a cafe in the city centre will draw ample attention from enthusiasts, passersby, and aspiring builders!

If this has tickled your fancy, reach out to Tossa R, these bikes are built to order, and there is room for only 8 more!

Earlier this year John also submitted a custom CX500 and he seemed to get the hang of it by submitting another one. Words by John:

I found this bike for sale in the inner city, where it seems to be in good shape but it had the usual hacked up additions like new led turn signals and a skull rear tail light and matching skull rear view mirrors. Overall the bike looked great for it’s age and I was excited that it was the first year of the CX (1978) so I had to have it. After re-wiring and flushing and cleaning the fuel system I had her running like new again, with only 18K miles this bike still has allot of life and barely broke in. Once I knew the motor was strong and all the electrical and charing systems was working properly, I started the transformation. The bike was stripped down to just the frame and engine, stripped, cleaned, repainted and polished. The engine case covers, tank and fender were sent out for a professional stripping and two color powder coat in gloss black and orange. Many new parts were added to the bike including the custom aluminum subframe (seat bracket) and mono shock conversion, making this bike sit firm and strong. The carbs were also cleaned and fitted with new jets for better performance with the newly added 2;1 exhaust and UNI pod filters, this bike not only looks and sounds great but turns many heads as it rolls through town.

CX500 (12)Tell us about your project

This is my first cafe racer project. It’s based on a Honda CX 500 fron 1981. I am just an ordinary guy and I do not own any motorcycle business. I Started the project in December 2017 and finished in July 2018. I’ve done all the jobs in my small garage. This project was a big challenge for me as this motorcycle I bought wasn’t in its best condition. I learned lots of new things about motorcycles and motorcycle parts restoration. It wasn’t an easy project for me as some parts were in miserable condition and all jobs didn’t go as smooth as supposed to. But in the end I like the result.

Why did you build this bike?

I’ve always been keen on restoration, whether it is a furniture, bicycle or motorcycle. I love to give new life to old things. This motorcycle was a new challenge for me after a few bicycles and a Chinese motorcycle Keeway speed 125 restoration projects.

Why did you pick this base bike and where does it come from?

I knew it’s going to be a Honda CX 500 because I love that V-type engine. As I was on a very tight budget I was searching for an affordable motorcycle to me. I bought a donor bike for £450 what was a bad idea, I discovered it later, because lots of parts were missing and damaged, and it was not so easy to find affordable spare parts for this motorcycle.

CX500 (8) CX500 (27)

What was your idea or vision?

As it was my first cafe racer project there wasn’t any specific idea how it must look. I just wanted to build something similar to those cafe racers what I’ve seen on internet. The vision become clear on the working process when I had to put all the parts together.

Any interesting challenges?

The biggest challenge was to find affordable good looking spare parts for this project. And the second challenge for me was engine disassembly and assembly including valve lapping and adjustment, as I never done it before. Learned all this stuff from internet and books. Finally done it very well, as the engine runs with no problems.

Did you got help from others or did you outsource any work?

I did the most jobs myself including electrical rewiring, carburetor cleaning and adjusting and tire fitting. Except for frame and wheels that has been taken to the nearest shot blasting company for a powder coating.

CX500 (23) CX500 (17) CX500 (28)

What modifications are made and what parts are used?

The frame has been modified by welding rear seat loop to fit the new seat. The clip-on bars installed and front fork shortened. New Pirelli Route tires has been fitted. New longer rear shock absorbers. LED turn signals installed at the clip-on bar ends and LED strip light turn signals installed on rear shock absorbers. Dashboard lights installed into the front fork top triangle, also new headlight, speedometer and tachometer. New stylish exhausts and exhaust pipes wrapped with heat tape. Flat mounted Ballistic EVO3 lithium 8 cell battery and Ignitech CDI unit installed.

And most important: how does it ride?

It rides excellent. I love the sound of the engine. Also got lots of compliments from other riders.

The Honda CX500 remains of those base bikes that keeps builders inspired. During the last three years, I’ve featured dozens of them. To be honest, in my opinion, there is one bike standing out for me, and that is still Sacha Lakic’s version. Nevertheless, this is a seriously costly machine. But to customize a “poor men’s Guzzi”, you don’t have spent thousands of dollars. Enter Cameron Sault, founder of Sault Built located in Wainfleet, Ontario, Canada (an hour south of Toronto, Ontario, Canada). Cam is a young, deaf artist who loves the familiar vibration of an engine in operation, and the smell of gasoline floating through the air as the machine takes you somewhere new. In addition to building beautiful machines, he is also passionate about custom furniture building and metal sculpting. An artist at heart, Cam’s unique visions drive him to create custom and one of a kind projects all by hand.

Since the Sault Built Garage opened in 2014, Cam has been working on some creatively challenging projects that would barely allow him to leave the garage. To Cam, this is his ideal situation, as sitting around when there is an ongoing project is a foreign idea to him. So, enough about him. Let’s talk bikes!

Ever since Cam found this grimy 1980 Honda CX500 bike in the tiny shed (which had been sitting in there for a little over a decade), he immediately purchased it without a second thought. He had a great vision for this bike build and wanted to transform it into a brat and cafe racer mix. From the front to the end he chopped the gauges, handlebar clamp, rear section, airbox, battery holder, and both fenders. Once the CXwas “naked” he had to sit and memorize every part of the floor and table, which gave him more ideas for the build. He ended up chopping the fender making it shorter, hand-built a rear fender with a microstrip LED light underneath the rear fender, hand-built front, and back micro LED signal lights, added a hand-built battery box with an 8-cell antigravity battery underneath of the bike which you may see in the photo, and hand-built mini fairing just above the headlight system. Installed the clip-bars, speedo, LED headlight, new suspensions, front tire (Avon Speedmaster), rear tire (Firestone Deluxe Champion), pod airs, custom solo seat by Triple K Upholstery.

Three weeks ago we’ve featured this cool Honda CL350 Brat build by John Thompson, owner of Retro Rebuilds. He’s specialized in (re)building vintage Honda motorcycles. He built up a pretty firm list of custom bikes and today he presented us his latest machine based on a 1982 Honda CX500. And as many readers may know, I have a special “thing” with the CX500, as it was this machine that made me start this blog three years ago.

John aimed to create a “modern-day warrior” to attack the streets of a downtown city. And if you take a good look, it may look like a direct relative of David Bailey’s Yamaha Virago we’ve featured back in 2015. Go ahead, see for yourself: XV920 Virago by David Bailey.

Honda CX500 Motolifestyle (1)Struck by a blue flash

An active lad on Instagram, I had noticed his posts and like what he produces and how Sjoerd is marketing Motolifestyle, his small custom bike business. “Small” is actually not a very apt description of his online following. Picked up on Instagram by @caferacersofinstagram our man hit an audience of over 900K enthusiasts and topped it off with @black_list entry showing his creation to over 2.4 million petrol minded geeks.

While getting ready to ride the 2017 DGR Amsterdam ride I was admiring some of the nearly 1.000 bikes that would take part. Unexpectedly a striking blue and very retro 70’s Opel GT cruises the parking lot. A lovely sight.

Even better was its tow. A trailer carrying a similarly retro Honda CX500 in an identical color scheme! How’s that for coordination? Such was my first real-life encounter with our builder from the South of our country. With an entrance like that, our friend deserves some editorial attention on our platform. His good taste and zest for harmony in his builds is clear. Just check out the much-shared pictures on social media.Honda CX500 Motolifestyle (2) Honda CX500 Motolifestyle (8)

High octane blood

Like so many custom aficionados, Sjoerd Veenstra grew up dreaming of bikes “making 4-stroke engine sounds” revving the internal motor running for more. With a dad alternating between a Ducati racer and Honda Enduro motorcycles while wrenching on old English bikes it will come as no surprise the boy was destined to follow in those footsteps. By the way, the Opel is the car his dad owned when he was in his twenties. It remained in the family and is now lovingly owned by Sjoerd.

Being a good boy, our wrencher started riding bikes at the age of 17, off road on a Honda XL 250 to be exact. Nice,  legal(-ish) and a great way to learn how to practice mastering two wheels. Although already 21 when he actually started riding on the road, Sjoerd caught up quickly.

Honda CX500 Motolifestyle (6) Honda CX500 Motolifestyle (5)

Buying, selling, buying, selling etc.

Starting with a Yamaha R6 as his dream bike at the time he managed to own over 25 bikes in just over five years. His current collection of bikes is evidence to the widespread interests of the builder. Besides the Opel and the blue Honda CX500, the workshop harbors a Honda CBR600 (track-only) race bike and a KTM E-XC Freeride electric enduro.

Choosing between riding or working on bikes is equally challenging for the owner of Motolifestyle. Struggling with technical issues or with unexpected track conditions offer satisfaction when disentangled.

Sjoerd has had his track training from the best guys in motorcycle racing in the Netherlands. He has fond memories of the ‘Meet the Speed’ week in Almeria (Spain) organized by Wilco Zeelenberg and his extensive team of race instructors.

He lists his highest recorded speed ever at “299+”, which was on the open road before he discovered the fun of riding on a (much safer) track.

Inspired by the track

His antics on the track, in the dirt and on public roads fire up the inspiration in this Southern Dutchman. As stated he loves both revving his bikes as much as he does juggling his spanners in the workshop. Cafe racers are his ‘thing’ for sure. He just loves creating something out of the ordinary and lets his passion lead his creative vibes. A lot of the building takes place in in his head rather than struggling with sketches on paper.

It all seems to come naturally to him. Asked about his preference to build a bike for a well-known person with an unlimited budget, to our surprise Sjoerd replies that he finds the thought boring. He would rather let a bike tell a story, whether it be a personal one or a brand philosophy. Budget restraints would just add stimulus to a project.

The prefers this challenge more than putting together a bike while not having to worry about spending.

The Protagonist

The main character in this story is the second bike the wrencher ever built. An exquisite Honda CX500C. Sjoerd really digs turning these ‘ugly ducks into elegant swans’.

In this particular case, he started off with an old and rusty two-wheeled apparatus. He decided he wanted to produce a clean as possible bike while trying to limit himself to the parts he had in stock in his studio.

With a little help from his dad, Sjoerd managed to create the outlines of what he had been fantasizing about. Nearly all the work was performed by our artist himself; from the sandblasting to the paintwork. The base he worked from is described by Sjoerd as a ‘silk black sweet café racer’.

As a board builder, he started shaping the bike into the right proportions. One of the main eye-catching features is the gas tank. A replica Benelli ‘Mojave’ specimen took the place of the original Honda canister.

Honda CX500 Motolifestyle (3) Honda CX500 Motolifestyle (4) Honda CX500 Motolifestyle (7)

Stock or homemade?

Seats are utterly defining the look of a bike. Although no fan of stock aftermarket material, Sjoerd still decided to use the one as seen on the Honda now. Reason? Because he likes the way it fits the profile and because he had it lying on a shelf somewhere.

Making up for using stock material the builder set out to make a lot of the parts himself from aluminum sheets. A decision was made to mount homemade copper fuel lines too. To avoid electrical problems with this old Honda, all wiring was renewed.

Not surprisingly it took our Motolifestyle hero less time to sell the bike then he needed to create it. For nearly a year a BMW S1000R rider is saddled with the problem of having to decide which bike he wants to ride.

Rather than exhausting ourselves in further descriptions of this build we will let the pictures tell the rest of the story. They are worth far more than a 1.000 words…

Honda C500 Custom 2BikeBrewers ran into Hanok Siefu at the Big Twin Bike Expo in the Netherlands recently. He was competing against more than sixty other builders at the show with his shed built Honda CX 500.

With his roots in Ethiopia, this fellow countryman has firmly set up camp below sea level. Residing in Almere Hanok has spent quite some time in the Dutch army, moving quickly through the ranks, leaving six years later as a sergeant. He then started his career while studying for his bachelor in Psychology simultaneously.

At the end of 2017, he is switching uniforms once again. The blue light stays, however, as he will board the ambulance as a paramedic.

Sights set on the future

With an introduction like this, it is clear this builder has an open mind but clear goals in life. With already two builds completed, he dreams of one day trading his shed for a professional workshop and earning his livelihood building bikes.

He has always had a thing for two-wheeled vehicles, riding scooters as a youngster. While he was stationed in the army barracks near the Assen TT circuit, the speeding racing bikes with their roaring sound were as Sirens luring Hanok with their enchanting music.

He did not crash on the coast as many sailors did in Greek mythology, but the crush of bikes and the culture that comes with has settled deep into our friend’s soul.

Riding illegally

Without a drivers license, the soldier was limited to riding within the compound. When he returned safely from a tour in Afghanistan, his wife was so happy, she surprised him with riding lessons.

Builders will be builders, so now our licensed rider took to the streets on a bike that was his first project too.

The cafe racer Yamaha XS750 brings back fond memories, as do most first loves, don’t they? Learning lessons in practice when building your bike and testing your ideas live on the road is challenging and exhilarating at the same time.

Asked about his brand preferences Hanok replies that he does not really care. It is the bike itself and its customizing potential that actually inspires him, irrespective of it’s make. However, he is quick to remark that, although he has no specific taste for a bike, he will never give a ‘Piaggio MP3’ a second glance. But then again, can this be counted as a bike anyway? Three wheels squeezing themselves on the road through a loophole in legislation is more like it.Honda C500 Custom

From shed to shop

Our man from Almere may prefer riding, but at the same time, he dreams of one day being able to spend his days as a pro builder, exchanging his shed for a proper and fully decked out workshop.

Alongside his dreams of becoming a professional, he would also like to build bikes for two guys who are world renowned for their achievements at high speed on four wheels. Modern cafe racers are what our fabricator has in mind for both Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen (both F1 heroes).

While we were talking about his dreams Hanok came up with another idea quite a bit left of center. “How about a café racer with a rotary engine?” he suggested. That’s one bike we would be looking forward to for sure!

Honda CX 500 project

Focusing back to the bike that got our conversation started we asked the Dutchman why he picked this particular bike as his second project. “The has been used for similar projects and has proved his reliabilities” he counters. “I really wanted to be able to concentrate on the design and was trying to avoid having to solve highly complex technical issues.”

“I had a clear picture in my mind where I wanted to go with the bike and it had to be loud! Fortunately, Kees van der Starre of Star Twin Motors came up with these phenomenal exhausts. He was also the one that suggested using the ‘Wave’ brake discs.”Honda C500 Custom 4

Inspiration

“I got my inspiration for this project from the CX500 that Sasha Lakic built.” (in fact, that bike inspired our founder to start with BikeBrewers.com). The Serbian born (1964) Lakic is an all round designer and architect. He has won many awards in a wide array of projects. Definitely, someone who will have inspired many upcoming talents all over the world.

While focusing on the design part and trying to work within the limits of his budget, Hanok wanted to steer away from the whirlpool of technical issues. It prompted him to call in the assistance of Star Twin again for the front end, rear end as well as the wiring. The engine rebuild was performed by Marco Becker.

Hanok is very proud of this second project and rides the bike as often as he can, raising lots of thumb ups along the way. He particularly loves the unique roar of the exhausts. And loud they are!

Readying up for his next project he needs money to make it happen. He has spent over € 10K on the Honda, but it’s for sale for a mere € 5.500. Quite the bargain we guess for those riders who are looking for a one of a kind bike, without the long winter hours in their shed.Honda C500 Custom 3

I have a special thing with the Honda CX500. Actually, it was this CX500 Cafe Racer by Sacha Lakic that inspired me to start with BikeBrewers back in 2015. I honestly thought that is was pretty impossible to come close to Lakic’s design let alone equal it. But the guys from Motoism, based in Munich, Germany, took a shot and it turned out very, very well. First a little background info on the donor bike:

The Honda CX engine and technology was way ahead of its competition. The 80° V-twin engine was liquid cooled, had no kick starter, was shaft driven and had a state of the art ignition system that was separated from the rest of the electronics. Due to the typical engine setup which only was used by Moto Guzzi, the CX500 was often called the “poor men’s Guzzi”. Like many other bikes, the CX had many variations, like the GL500 Silverwing. This machine, introduced in 1981, was a mid-size touring bike with a CX500 engine but got a more reliable transistorized ignition system. The GL500 also got Honda’s Pro-Link mono shock setup and was available as a naked bike and a touring bike with full fairing.

Unfortunately, the Honda CX/GL range never was the big sales hit Honda aimed at. Despite the fact that it gets harder every day to find one, there are still builders out there that dare to take the challenge of transforming the rather chunky stock bike into something damn good looking. Welcome Motoism’s Honda GL500-JPN (with a wink to the bikes homeland Japan).

Honda GL500 Silverwing 1

The biggest challenge was to get the proportions right. It’s the combination of the WIG-welded subframe, modified swing arm (baseline-tilt) and the awesome fiberglass headlight unit with two H3 ellipsoids (for high/low beam) & custom LED daylight that creates a whole different look of the machine. Motoism wanted to merge past and present in this bike with the heritage of Honda kept in place together with state of the art, high-end technology upgrades.

The complete front end comes from a CBR600RR with double radial Tokico brakes and Galfer waved discs and steel brake lines. The Pro-Link shock is replaced by an adjustable Öhlins shock. These upgrades make sure that the bike handles and brakes like a modern bike.

As you may expect, the electric system is built on a Motogadget M-unit which is accompanied with a Motogadget Mini Speedo/Tacho, push button controls and LED m-Blaze disc handlebar indicators. The latter are attached to a set of LSL anodized alloy handlebars and grips.

Honda GL500 Silverwing 9The seat is custom made from suede leather and is attached to a beautiful fiberglass tail with integrated tail light and LED turn signals. Just below the seat there’s room for the electronic components, which is completely integrated into the design. Of course, all wearing parts have been replaced and the engine got a complete revision. It got some new paint that matches the bike as a whole. A custom 2 in 1 exhaust with BOS silencer will make sure that other road users will notice you. While the original 50hp and 50Nm are enough to have a lot of fun with this bike, the engine can be tuned for a bit more power.

Last but not least, the bike got a set of wired wheels. The hubs are custom CNC machine ones, and the anodized alloy rims are also made to order. To give the bike a badass look, it got front: Continental TKC 80 Twinduro wheels. 19″ for the front, 17″ for the rear.

Adding it all up, Motoism aimed high and, in my opinion, succeeded. The bike lookes awesome, has the right proportion, contains only the best of the best parts and got the finishing touch of real German quality. I think they hit the right spot with this bike.

The concept around this bike is pretty similar to Lakic’s CX500: the bike is limited to a number of 10 and customers can modify little things in the design when they order it. In order to assure that the buyer can actually ride this beauty, it’s compliant with all EU legislation. More info about the bike can be found here.Honda GL500 Silverwing 2

The last push I needed to start with BikeBrewers.com two years ago was this amazing Honda CX500 Cafe Racer by Sacha Lakic. I think it would be a great achievement to equal a build like this, and I’ve always have a slight preference over custom CX500’s. The bike you see right here is built by Will Nicholson, an industrial designer from New Zealand. It’s the result of combining his three passions: designing, creating and motorcycles.

Back in 2015, Will participated in a public auction and he started bidding on a 1978 Honda CX500 which was disassembled and offered in boxes. The previous owner was an older gentleman who wanted to build a cafe racer, but didn’t found the time to finish it due to a busy job and a family with young kids. The engine hadn’t been running for 30 years and the overall shape was pretty bad.

It had suffered years of neglect and had obviously had a hard life when it was running. Rust, rotten electrics, dents, cracks, missing parts, you name it. But Will saw the potential. With a tight budget and the eagerness to learn new skills, he was the perfect new owner of this project bike. He wanted to build a clean looking machine with a focus on the unique V-twin engine. Equipped with a workshop manual and a set of tools, he started to tear down the bike in order to get his desired machine on the road.

Honda CX500 Bratstyle 8Honda CX500 Bratstyle 11 With his background as industrial designer, he made a digital render and designed most of the custom parts himself. Since he didn’t had the room to work on the bike at his own place, he went over to friends or to his parents shed. But he also used his own living room to create this cool Honda CX500 Bratstyle. Over one and a half year he cleaned, rebuilt, and repainted it down to every nut, bolt and washer entirely by himself.

The result is pretty awesome. Unfortunately, Will moved over to the UK temporarily, so the bike is now waiting in storage for it’s creator to return. Will: “Before leaving I managed to get a couple of rides on the bike which I will never forget. There’s nothing quite like riding a bike you’ve invested money, hard work, time, and above all passion to bring life back to an old machine.”

Honda CX500 Brat 3

When I started BikeBrewers.com in the summer of 2015, one of the first posts was about the awesome CX500 Café Racer by Sacha Lakic. I always see this bike as the last piece that made me start blogging about custom motorcycles. A bike that also made the “poor men’s Guzzi” extremely popular amongst custom motorcycle builders. Lakic’s bike is still is popping up everywhere on the web. And if I look back at that time, it was also a CX500 that put Ironwood Custom Motorcycles on the map. While he started in an old storage container, he soon moved over to a bigger and more professional workshop. But being one of the most successful builders in Holland, this place quickly became too small so owner Arjan van den Boom had to scale thing up again and his buddy Eric Kalter joined the team. A classic story of “turning your hobby into your job”.

Arjan started in 2012 with some Honda CB café racers/brats and of course that “Green Goblin” CX500 brat we’ve featured back in 2015. But after a while he started working on BMW airheads. With success. His work is featured all over the internet, with two big fat features on Pipeburn: a radical BMW R80 and “The Heartbreaker“, a beautiful BMW R75/5. But after an impressive series of custom BMW’s, Arjan got his hands in a Honda CX500 again and decided to build a CX500 Brat again. The result is just awesome.
