Another custom XSR700?!? Yes…

Since the introduction of the Yamaha XSR700 back in 2016, I predicted that we could a lot of customized versions. With the XSR-series, Yamaha openly aimed at an audience that wants to distinguish themselves with their motorcycles. For this, they offer a complete range of custom, bolt-on parts to personalize the ride. Next to that, Yamaha launched their “Faster Son” campaign and the Yamaha Yard Built program, challenging builders all over the world to customize their Yamaha’s. So it was to be expected that Yamaha is heavily involved in the custom motorcycle scene. And this is already the fourth custom XSR700 on BikeBrewers.com this month…! Maybe this is “XSR700 month?”. Well, I just didn’t want to keep this one for myself.

This XSR700 Tracker right here is submitted by John Hand of Wasp Motorcycles. John in a big fan of the brand new parallel twin. And if you’ve ever ridden one, you know why. The liquid cooled engine puts out 75hp, but more important: 68Nm of torque and delivers the power all over the RPM-range. Combine this with a pretty light weight and there’s one word that pops up: FUN! And John just wanted to extrapolate that big fun-factor and decided to create a XSR700 Tracker with some really cool upgrades.

He took a big fat WP USD fork from a KTM and a radial, single Brembo braking setup to make clear that he was pretty serious with this bike. Using this fork opened up the possibility to use a Talon hub together with SM pro rims, for a set of laced wheels. The last three custom XSR’s also ditched the cast wheels and I just love it (Yamaha: maybe you should put this option in your catalog…). He placed a pretty high and wide handlebar to give the rider full control when racing the dirt track. The aluminum gas tank and custom radiator housing are custom-made by Lamb Engineering. For a more classic look, John made a pretty odd modification on the rear: he converted the bike from a monoshock setup into a dual shock setup. For this, he fabricated a complete new frame and swingarm out of lightweight tubular steel to get two YSS shocks in place, making the new frame meant saving weight, in comparison to the frame and swing arm on the standard XSR, John managed to shave over 10kg just on his new lightweight frame. The frame was welded using oxygen / accetaline torch and bronze welding rods, reason for this is unlike MIG or TIG welding, bronze welding adds some more flexibility, it’s not so stiff, so is has less chance of cracking or breaking in an accident. John has been working at Wasp Motorcycles for nearly 7 years his job is building frames and bronze welding, he says “bronze welding is the best, can’t beat it, it’s a shame because it’s a dying art. I’m only 22 years old , so I want to keep this old school way of making frames going”.

XSR700 Chronos Joyride 1Under the label “if it ain’t Dutch, it ain’t much”, Yamaha Motor The Netherlands and watch brand TW Steel, work together to create a line of unique custom motorcycles that are linked to each other. One year ago this unique collaboration started with this cool custom XV950R, built by the guys of Numbnut Motorcycles. Yesterday the successor was presented at Republic Moto in Rotterdam. This time it was the honor of our friend Arjan van den Boom of Ironwood Custom Motorcycles to get loose on the Yamaha XSR700. Regular readers already know Arjan’s work and the rest of the world follows in a quick pace since Ironwood’s star is rising, FAST!

The XSR700 is not only a cool machine of its own, Yamaha targeted the XSR-series for buyers who’d like to add their own style to the machine. For this, Yamaha offers a (very) wide range of custom parts and customization kits. Thu punchy parallel twin makes this bike not only cool but adds a big fun factor to the machine. So when Arjan got the call from TW Steel and Yamaha, he was thrilled. He only got one simple direction: “get your inspiration from our limited edition timepiece, the Chronos’ Joyride”. A unique watch in the “Son of Time” line with a strong tie to (custom) motorcycles, incorporating key elements such as the clean lines, the pistons, and the fuel cap, the watch breathes boldness, while maintaining a stylish, clean look.

XSR700 Chronos Joyride 3

The result worked out very well: it’s not only a unique motorcycle, it’s also a healthy mix between simple and aggressive. The most striking element of the bike are the red Kineo wheels combined with the “Grigio Telesto 0098” paint job, which was originally designed for the Lamborghini Aventador. But next to that, the bike also got some serious upgrades: in front, Arjan used a MT-10 USD fork with complete brake setup. Together with a new Öhlins rear shock (with a red spring!), the handling and braking are now one superbike level.

A craftsman as Arjan is, he created some unique parts of this bike in his workshop like the side panels, front fender, radiator brackets and headlight brackets. The gas tank is one of those custom elements that stands out by not standing out and is perfectly aligned with the seat. The upholstery comes from Marcel Miller of Miller Kustom Upholstery, THE MAN in Holland when it comes to leathers.

The finishing touch is the custom exhaust with an SC Project carbon muffler, which makes this machine scream like a…. hmmm, how can we describe this… Well: it’s aggressive!

Yamaha made a strong move with the introduction of the their 07 and 09 models of the XSR and MT series. Where the 09 models have an awesome, high performing 3 cylinder, the 07 models are fitted with a 270 degree twin engine with Yamaha’s crossplane engine philosophy. Both engines have their own strong set of characteristics and both are extremely fun to ride.

With the 07 models, Yamaha has a clear “value for money” aim, and both the MT-07 and the XSR700 are very affordable and successful. Several prices where won around the world and Yamaha stole the heart of a complete new audience.

Al bolt-on parts are available here.

But that’s just some background info… What do we have here? Well, it’s another cool creation of one of these Yamaha’s by JvB Moto, a German brewer who melted down the internet a with their custom Yamaha XSR700 called the “Super 7”. The Super 7 was such a success, that all custom parts are now offered as a complete range of bolt on parts in several Yamaha shops.

So what do you do with a successful concept? Right: modify it a little bit and try to make another success of it. That’s exactly what JvB Moto did with this custom MT-07 Scrambler. Where the XSR had a more retro and racy design, the MT-07 Scrambler keeps it’s design as a modern bike, but with a more off road ambition. To keep it simple, they also call this “Super7″…
yamaha-mt-07-scrambler-6 yamaha-mt-07-scrambler-4

So what did they do to the stock MT-07? First off all: all technical components of the original machine are untouched. No wires where stripped and no disc grinder or welding machine where used. This means that the average biker can create this own Super7 without having difficulties with the insurance or warranty of the bike.

Some mods:

  • Removing of some covers at the rear and the engine area
  • Custom front fender with lightweight brackets
  • New headlight
  • Wirth front springs with “heavier” fork oil
  • 46mm Öhlins rear shock
  • Arrow exhaust system
  • LSL handlebar with risers
  • New grips
  • LED indicators
  • Simplified dash/speedo
  • Replaced the stock mirrors with a single one
  • Conti TKC off road tires

Just like with the custom XSR700, all parts and mods will be available as bolt on parts later on.

Unless the fact that the principle of this MT-07 Scrambler Super7 is the same as it’s XSR700 brother, it’s a bike with a completely different image.

Owner Jens vom Brauck:

“You can also put your sleeping bag and a tent, or a big beer case on the rack and do the scrambler thing. Cruise around in the country side with your friends or go to the beach. It is all great fun with this bike, I tried it myself…”

The Yamaha Yard Built program stimulates custom bike builders to come up with cool designs based on stock Yamaha bikes. The main requirement is that the built doesn’t need welding or frame cutting. If a project is successful, the builders are able to create their own custom kits and sell them to Yamaha customers.

German brewer JvB-Moto created this cool Yamaha XSR700 Scrambler “Super 7”, based on Yamaha XSR700; a “budget bike” which has the blood of the Yamaha MT-07.

Update 11-8-2016: This Yamaha XSR700 Scrambler melted down the website and our social media channels and is also listed in our Top 10 Customs of 2015.
