5 Epic Motorcycle Routes in Europe

You’ve read that right: no build thread, building tips, bike photos. No. I thought it was time to write a cool article about the essence of motorcycles: riding them. Enjoying freedom. We all know the Route 66 or Highway 1 route in the US or the Oxley in Australia. And we all know those bucket list trips of riding in the Himalaya or doing the alternative Dakar trip. With over 10 million square meters, Europe literally offers every type of scenery and nature you can imagine. And did you know that Europe covers almost 7 million kilometers of roads? Ask a European motorcyclist about the best roads to ride and everybody has their own top spot to rev their hearts: from twisty roads in the alps to ice racing in Norway. With so many options it’s often hard to choose where to go when you’re planning a trip so we’ve made a list of the X epic motorcycle routes in Europe.

Napels to Salerno – Italy

The Transfagarasan Highway – Romania

This route is a corniche road which is 50km long with twists, turns dives and climbs which is also called The Road of a Thousand Bends, Attempting this route in summer might get you stuck in the tourist traffic that chokes the narrow road. Leaving behind the vehicular anarchy of Naples and sweeping round the bay, soon you will pass Sorrento and be firmly into the Rat pack song sheet past the Isle of Capri, gliding through Positano, Ravello and Amalfi itself.

TRANSFAGARASAN HIGHWAY, ROMANIA
The Transfagarasan Highway is also one of the most dramatic roads in the country, maybe even the world. It’s 100 kilometres of twists and turns, which jumps to the conclusion that its one of the finest biking roads in Europe running north to south in the most amazing pattern, starting from the basics plains of Transylvania, making dozens of razor sharp hairpins along the way across the highest mountains in Romania then across a rocky lunar landscape and finally emerging onto its snow-capped plateau.

THE COL DE TURINI, FRANCE
Col de Turini is a high mountain pass that runs in the department of Alpes-Maritimes in France. It is famous for a stage of the reputable Monte Carlo Rally. This section os road is great for testing your carving skills in dry conditions. With an average climb of 7.2% over 15.3 km, it was featured on Top Gears greatest driving road in the world. This will really test your skills, while also being able to take in the view of the marvellous views off the side of the great mountains, with the highest point reaching 1607 metres. The road lies between Sospel to La Bollène, with long straights linking 34 hairpin bends.

TROLLSTIGEN, NORWAY
This route is part of Norwegian National Road 63 that connects oggeberget in Rauma and Valldal in Normal. Trollstigen is Norway’ most motorbike friendly mountain that rests in the beautiful Rauma. The route has a steep incline of 9 percent, and eleven hairpin bends up its steep mountain side. As you move up the road, it gets narrow, with many sharp hairpins. Closed during late autumn and winter, operating season will be from about May to October, but can sometimes change due to weather conditions. You can stop at the viewing platform, giving you a full scale view of the road, which I think anyone can say, is pretty amazing.

BODOM CIRCLE, FINLAND
This route takes in the sights between the little know Bodomintie and Gunnarsvagen and the magnificent of the road gives every rider the reason to maximise their enjoyment of riding. Finland is well known for its brilliant scenery, and the Bodom Circle perfectly fits into one of the country most beautiful sceneries. Speeds cant be obtained to a high speed, as its many small villages and junctions around the lake restrict high speed limits, but sometimes its not always about the speed. Take in the amazing sights of the Lake Bodom, while enjoying a very scenic route through this stunning part of Finland.
