10 Best BMW Cafe Racer [Airheads]

BMW Cafe Racer is one of the most sought-after custom motorcycles. Google it and you’ll find tons of results. Since the custom bike scene got his big revival,  the BMW R-series or “Airheads” are one of the most popular base bikes for cafe racers. And that’s for multiple reasons. They’re extremely reliable, they are pretty easy to work on, there is a massive scene of R-series enthusiasts around the globe, there are extremely large numbers sold and still running strong and parts are easy to get by. Oh, and before I forget: they sound cool and have enough power to cruise around in modern-day traffic!

In the last couple of years, I’ve seen many custom build airhead BMW cafe racer, and I don’t think that these machines will lose popularity. But I thought it was time to sum up the best BMW cafe racer airheads out there. So no R nineT’s, K-series or other oil/liquid-cooled Beemers.

BMW R100 by Wrench Kings

A beautiful BMW R100 cafe racer built by our Dutch friends of Wrench Kings. It was a commissioned build for a lady with style, Karin van Kuijk, and she was looking for a real “old school cafe racer”. Since she wanted a real old school bike and no modern classic, the BMW R-series seemed a logical choice. While the R-series are known for their incredibly reliable engines, the bike also got a complete overhaul to ensure that Karin can enjoy their ride to the fullest.

We just love the overall classic look and color palette of the bike. It looks like it comes straight out of the factory. [more info]

BMW R100R by Diamond Atelier

The guys from Diamond Atelier in Germany quickly became world famous for their beautiful custom bikes. They’ve been featured all over the web and beyond their expectations, they got tons of request for building bikes. They really launched themselves with this BMW R100R. Today their line-up is pretty impressive and they even produce small series of their most successful bikes. We still have a special thing with this one. With the knobby tires and cut-off rear and it maybe not a typical cafe racer, we simply didn’t want to hold this one from this list. [more info]

BMW R100R by Vagabund Moto

When we list a bike of Diamond Atelier, we needed to list this bike from Vagabund Moto. The guys from Vagabund walked the same path as Diamond Atelier: one of their creations melted down the internet which boosted the shop’s popularity. While this also isn’t a typical cafe racer with the high bars and knobby tires, it sure is one fine custom BMW we didn’t want you to miss. [read more]

BMW R80 by Avro Customs

An extremely clean BMW cafe racer built by Craig Jones, owner of Avro Customs. A couple of years ago, we found this bike in a BMW forum on Facebook, which instantly attracted tons of likes, shares, and comments. We published some pics here and Craig submitted his bike to Pipeburn which published it later.

It’s that exact clean design and the beautiful rear suspension setup that makes this bike stand out. Definitely worth its spot in this list. [read more]
